Amazon has become a primary retail channel for thousands of brands, but it's an unforgiving one when it comes to packaging compliance. Violations result in receiving rejections, removal fees, and stranded inventory.
Amazon FBA Packaging Requirements
Barcodes
- Each unit must have a scannable barcode: UPC, EAN, or Amazon FNSKU
- No conflicting barcodes on the same unit (cover or remove manufacturer barcodes if adding FNSKU)
- Barcodes must be scannable at 4 feet distance
Box and Case Requirements
- Corrugated boxes must meet weight/stack test requirements
- Maximum box weight: 50 lbs (unless single item exceeds this)
- Box dimensions: No single side longer than 25 inches unless approved
Poly Bagging Rules
Products that could be a suffocation hazard (bags, small parts) must be in poly bags with:
- Suffocation warning printed or attached to any bag with an opening of 5 inches or greater
- Warning must be in minimum 10pt type
Fragile Item Packaging
- Drop test requirement: must survive a 3-foot drop test
- Provides 2 inches of cushioning material on all sides
Packaging Design for Conversion on Amazon
Beyond compliance, Amazon packaging must work hard at PDP (Product Detail Page) level:
- Hero image: White background, product fills 85% of frame, no props
- Infographic images: Show key features, dimensions, use cases
- Lifestyle images: In-context use photography
- Comparison table images: Compare your variants or vs. competitor
The packaging should photograph well in these contexts. Matte finishes can look washed out in product photography; consider satin or gloss for better product images.
