Labeling requirements in Australia
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) writes the Food Standards Code, enforced by state and territory agencies. Labels must be in English.
- Food: the Food Standards Code covers the Nutrition Information Panel, ingredients, allergens and date marking, including Plain English Allergen Labelling.
- Origin: most retail food needs a Country of Origin label under the ACCC-administered Information Standard.
- Supplements: most are therapeutic goods regulated by the TGA, with an AUST L or AUST R number and medicine labelling rules (TGO 92).
- Cosmetics: ingredient labelling under the Consumer Goods (Cosmetics) Information Standard, with ingredients covered by AICIS.
- CBD: regulated as a medicine by the TGA. Low-dose products are pharmacist-only and must be TGA approved, and others need a prescription.
