Labeling requirements in Germany
EU Regulation 1169/2011 (known as the LMIV in Germany) is the core food labelling rule, overseen by the BVL and enforced by the federal states. Mandatory information must be in German.
- Food: mandatory particulars, emphasised allergens, the nutrition declaration and 1.2 mm minimum x-height.
- Supplements: the Nahrungsergänzungsmittelverordnung (NemV) sets label wording and requires notification to the BVL.
- Cosmetics: Regulation 1223/2009, with an EU Responsible Person, CPNP notification and German-language use information.
- Packaging: the Verpackungsgesetz requires LUCID registration and participation in a dual system before you sell packaged goods.
- CBD: treated as an unauthorised novel food, and Administrative Courts in Berlin and Hamburg blocked CBD supplements in 2024.
