Packaging & Label Design for Brands in Mongolia
Mongolia's economy is driven by two mega-resources: the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine (operated by Rio Tinto/Turquoise Hill, now majority Mongolian state via Erdenes Oyu Tolgoi, one of the world's largest copper deposits, with the underground expansion reaching first sustainable production in 2023) and the Tavan Tolgoi coking coal complex (state-owned, exporting primarily to Chinese steel mills). These mining revenues have fuelled Ulaanbaatar's rapid urbanisation and a growing middle class demanding imported FMCG with Mongolian-language Cyrillic labelling. Mongolia is the world's second-largest producer of raw cashmere (behind China), supplying the fibre that feeds Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, and mid-market European sweater brands, making traceable-origin cashmere documentation increasingly demanded by EU buyers under supply-chain due diligence expectations.
Mongolia Packaging Regulations
MASM (Mongolian Agency for Standardization and Metrology, Монголын Стандарт, Хэмжил Зүйн Байгууллага) issues Mongolian national standards; Mongolian (Cyrillic script) is required on all domestic commercial product labels. Mongolia is not a member of the EAEU but maintains observer status since 2019; Russian-language labels are pragmatically accepted for bulk agricultural and consumer imports from Russia given historical trade patterns. EAEU TR CU standards are not legally mandatory but are frequently used as de facto import reference standards. For pharmaceutical regulation, the Ministry of Health administers drug registration through the Food, Medicine and Environmental Science Centre (FMESC), the existing reference to 'EPHA' was erroneous and should be disregarded. Cashmere exported to EU buyers is subject to standard textile fibre labelling requirements under EU Textile Regulation 1007/2011; CITES documentation applies only for wildlife products, not cashmere per se.
Key Industries in Mongolia
Cashmere fibre production and export (second-largest raw cashmere globally, Gobi Corporation, EVSEG), copper and gold mining (Oyu Tolgoi, Rio Tinto/Mongolia state JV), coking coal (Tavan Tolgoi, primarily Chinese steel market), livestock and meat, and artisanal food and leather goods.
