Most Supplement Labels Fail in One of Four Places
A supplement label has to do four jobs at once: sell on a crowded shelf, stand out as a tiny Amazon thumbnail, meet FDA labeling rules, and print correctly on a curved bottle. Most designers handle one or two. Here is where labels usually break.
1. Compliance gaps.
A missing statement of identity, a Supplement Facts panel in the wrong format, or a structure/function claim without the required FDA disclaimer. These get flagged by Amazon, retailers and regulators.
2. Lost in the thumbnail.
On Amazon, buyers first see your bottle at roughly the size of a postage stamp. If the product name and key benefit are not readable at that size, the click goes to a competitor.
3. Wrong label size.
A label designed without the exact container and wrap measurements overlaps the seam, wrinkles on the curve, or leaves a gap. The result is a reprint.
4. Files the printer rejects.
RGB colours, no bleed, low-resolution images or a missing dieline delay launches by weeks.
We design for all four from the first draft.

FDA Supplement Label Requirements We Design Around
US dietary supplement labels follow FDA rules, mainly 21 CFR 101.36 for the Supplement Facts panel. Every label we design includes these elements in the right place.
| Element | Where it goes | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Statement of identity | Front (principal display panel) | Product name plus the words "dietary supplement" or a term like "vitamin C supplement" |
| Net quantity of contents | Bottom 30% of the front panel | Count or weight, sized to the panel area |
| Supplement Facts panel | Information panel, right of the front | Serving size, servings per container, amount per serving, % Daily Value, footnotes |
| Other ingredients | Below the Supplement Facts panel | Fillers, capsule shell, flavours, in descending order by weight |
| Allergen statement | Near the ingredients | Major food allergens declared (e.g. milk, soy, fish, tree nuts, sesame) |
| Manufacturer or distributor | Information panel | Business name, city, state and ZIP |
| Adverse event contact | Information panel | A US address or phone number for reporting |
| Structure/function disclaimer | Linked by asterisk to each claim | The standard FDA disclaimer text, in a box when it isn't next to the claim |
Type size rules we follow: mandatory text at least 1/16 inch tall (based on lowercase "o"); Supplement Facts nutrient text at least 8 point, with reduced sizes allowed on small packages.
Claims: structure/function claims ("supports immune health") are allowed with the disclaimer and an FDA notification within 30 days of marketing. Disease claims ("treats arthritis") are not allowed on supplements. We flag risky wording, but final claim approval belongs to your regulatory reviewer.

Supplement Label Design FAQs

We design to FDA labeling layout requirements, including the statement of identity, net quantity, Supplement Facts panel, ingredients, manufacturer details and the claim disclaimer. Because claims and formulas carry legal responsibility, we recommend a final check by your regulatory consultant before printing.
It depends on the exact bottle. A label that wraps a bottle needs the measured circumference, the flat label area height, and the gap your labeling machine needs. We confirm these with you or your printer before design starts.
