Packaging & Label Design for Brands in Vanuatu
Vanuatu (population approximately 320,000, capital Port Vila on Efate island) is the Pacific's most linguistically diverse nation, with approximately 110 indigenous Bislama (Vanuatu Pidgin), English, and French language communities across 80+ islands. Vanuatu is internationally recognised as producing the world's finest kava (Piper methysticum, the ceremonial and social beverage root crop): Vanuatu noble kava cultivars (Borogoru, Melo Melo, Leay, and others) are the benchmark quality standard for kava export, with EU, Australian, US, and Japanese buyers distinguishing Vanuatu noble kava from lower-quality 'tudei' varieties. Kava is Vanuatu's largest agricultural export. Vanuatu cocoa (Trinitario hybrid from SHEFA, Sanma, and Malampa provinces) is internationally recognised as fine flavour cocoa by ICCO. Vanuatu is also known as an offshore financial centre and tax haven (no income tax, capital gains tax, or inheritance tax), attracting financial services and citizenship-by-investment programmes. Vanuatu's citizenship-by-investment programme (one of the Pacific's most accessible) has generated significant international scrutiny.
Vanuatu Packaging Regulations
VBQS (Vanuatu Bureau of Standards and Weights) and Ministry of Health govern product standards; English, French, and Bislama are all official languages, product labels for export use English and/or French. Vanuatu noble kava exported to the EU must comply with EU regulations: kavalactone content and chemotype restrictions apply; Germany (under the 2002 kava ban, now partially lifted after 2014 EU reassessment) and other EU members have specific import regulations for kava as a food supplement. Australian TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) regulates kava imports under the complementary medicine framework with import permit requirements and kavalactone quantity limits. Pacific Trade Invest assists export market access. Vanuatu cocoa exports to the EU require ICCO fine flavour certification and EU EUDR (Deforestation Regulation 2023/1115) due diligence compliance from December 2024.
