Packaging & Label Design for Brands in Myanmar
Myanmar's political and economic environment has been fundamentally disrupted since the military coup of February 1, 2021, when the Tatmadaw overthrew the NLD government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The resulting international sanctions have significantly impacted trade: the EU has imposed targeted sanctions on military-linked entities and individuals (under Regulation 2021/711 and subsequent amendments); the US has sanctioned MOGE (Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise) and other military-controlled companies; and Canada and UK have aligned with similar measures. Myanmar's garment and textile export sector, formerly a major supplier to European fashion brands via GSP preferences, has seen significant pullout by international buyers concerned about human rights due diligence (EU CSDDD). Yangon's consumer market continues to function with Burmese/Myanmar-script labelling requirements for domestic FMCG, but chronic currency devaluation (kyat fell sharply post-coup), fuel shortages, and banking system disruptions have severely contracted discretionary consumer spending.
Myanmar Packaging Regulations
FDA Myanmar (Food and Drug Administration), under the Ministry of Health, registers food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and medical device products; Myanmar (Burmese) script labels are legally required for all consumer products sold domestically. EU sanctions (most recently updated 2024) restrict trade with Myanmar military-linked businesses; specific product categories including teak timber (Myanma Timber Enterprise) are sanctioned under EU Regulation 2022/2348 and EU Regulation 2023/184. Rubies, jade, and other gemstones from Myanmar face effective EU and US trade exclusions if linked to military-controlled Myanma Gems Enterprise. The EU's EUDR (Deforestation Regulation 2023/1115) adds further due diligence requirements for any Myanmar timber, palm oil, or related commodities entering EU supply chains. ASEAN trade continues relatively normally for Yangon-based exporters to Thailand, China, and other ASEAN markets.
Key Industries in Myanmar
Gemstones (rubies from Mogok, jade from Kachin), teak timber (though EU/US sanctioned), natural gas, rice and pulse export (ASEAN markets), garments and textiles (though EU buyer pullout), and FMCG distribution.
