Packaging & Label Design for Brands in Senegal

Senegal is West Africa's most politically stable democracy and serves as the sub-region's financial and cultural hub: Dakar hosts the ECOWAS headquarters, major multinational African corporations (Ecobank Transnational, several major regional banks), and is the terminus of the Dakar-Diamniadio-AIBD highway and new airport infrastructure that is positioning Senegal as the gateway to Francophone West Africa. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye won the March 2024 presidential election, the first Senegalese opposition candidate to win the presidency outright, with pledges to renegotiate oil and gas contracts with foreign companies. The Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project (jointly with Mauritania), whose FLNG vessel began commercial operations in 2024, has made Senegal a hydrocarbon exporter for the first time, alongside the Sangomar offshore oil field (first Senegalese oil exported June 2024 via Woodside Energy). Bissap (dried hibiscus flowers) tea, Casamance honey, and groundnut-based products are Senegal's most distinctive artisanal export products targeting French specialty food market channels.

Senegal Packaging Regulations

BSN (Bureau Sénégalais de Normalisation, Senegalese Standards Bureau, under the Ministry of Trade and Industry) sets national standards aligned with UEMOA harmonised regulations; French is the sole official language and is mandatory on all commercial product labels. UEMOA food safety harmonisation norms apply for intra-UEMOA trade. DPML (Direction de la Pharmacie et du Médicament, under the Ministry of Health) registers pharmaceutical products; the previous reference to 'DPPML' was a minor acronym variation (DPML is the standard designation). ANSD (Agence Nationale de la Statistique et de la Démographie) is a statistical body, not a product regulatory authority as implied in the previous data entry. Pharmaceutical product dossiers are submitted in French to DPML. Fish exports from Senegal to the EU require IUU catch documentation and EU food safety compliance (EC Regulation 854/2004 framework); Senegal's fishing industry faces recurring EU access disputes and IUU monitoring.

Key Industries in Senegal
