Botswana Packaging Regulations

The Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS), established under the Standards Act of 1995 (Cap. 54:01) as the sole national standards body recognised by ISO, develops and enforces national standards including pre-packaged food labelling. The primary legislation is the Food Control Act 1993 (Cap. 65:05) and its subsidiary Food Control Regulations, which govern packaging, labelling, and advertising of pre-packaged food produced, imported, distributed, or sold in Botswana. Mandatory label elements include: name and address of the manufacturer, packer, distributor, importer, exporter, or supplier; ingredient list; net quantity; and expiry date, all in characters not less than 1 mm in height. Within SACU, South African NRCS-compliant packaging is broadly accepted for cross-border retail in practice. Pharmaceutical and medical device packaging requires pre-market registration with the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA), established under the Medicines and Related Substances Act 2013 (Cap. 69:01); BoMRA's 15-module registration dossier covers labelling, packaging materials, GMP compliance, container-closure specifications, and stability data.
