Packaging & Label Design for Brands in Mozambique
Mozambique hosts what may be Africa's most significant offshore natural gas reserves: the Rovuma Basin off the Cabo Delgado coast (northern Mozambique) holds an estimated 180+ trillion cubic feet of gas. Eni's Coral Sul FLNG (floating LNG facility) shipped its first commercial LNG cargo in 2022, making Mozambique an active LNG exporter. TotalEnergies' larger Mozambique LNG onshore project (handling the Area 1 blocks) was suspended in April 2021 following an insurgency in Cabo Delgado by IS-affiliated Ansar al-Sunna Wa Jama'ah fighters and has not yet fully restarted as of 2025. The insurgency also affects cashew farming, prawn fishing, and supply-chain logistics in the north. Maputo-centred FMCG retail operates under Portuguese-language labelling requirements within a Southern African supply chain primarily supplied through South Africa (SACU-adjacent trade patterns apply despite Mozambique's non-SACU status as a SADC member).
Mozambique Packaging Regulations
INNOQ (Instituto Nacional de Normalização e Qualidade) is the national standards body; Portuguese is the sole official language and is legally required on all consumer product labels. SADC regional harmonisation standards (SQAM, Standardisation, Quality Assurance, Accreditation and Metrology framework) apply for intra-SADC trade. Food and pharmaceutical imports require pre-market approval: pharmaceutical imports are registered with ARIMED (Agência Reguladora de Medicamentos e Tecnologias de Saúde, previously referenced as DNAM, ARIMED is the current operational authority under Ministry of Health). Mozambique benefits from EU-SADC EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement, provisionally applied since 2016) providing zero tariffs on eligible Mozambican exports to the EU. Cashew and prawns exported to EU markets must comply with EU food safety and MRL standards under EU Regulation 178/2002 and Directive 2006/52/EC (food additives).
Key Industries in Mozambique
LNG and natural gas export (Eni Coral Sul FLNG, TotalEnergies Area 1 pending restart), coal mining (Tete province, Vale, Vulcan Resources), cashew nuts, aluminium smelting (Mozal, Maputo), deepwater prawn fisheries, and FMCG import distribution.
