Packaging & Label Design for Brands in Romania

Romania is home to two of Europe's most successful automotive manufacturing stories: Dacia (acquired by Renault in 1999, now part of Renault Group and producing vehicles under the Dacia brand in Mioveni, Argeș County) produces the Duster, Sandero, and Spring EV for European markets, Duster is consistently among Europe's top-selling SUVs, while Ford manufactures in Craiova (Puma, Kuga models). Bucharest has emerged as a significant Eastern European IT hub (Endava, UiPath, the robotic process automation unicorn founded in Bucharest, eMAG, and many EU-funded tech programmes). Romania's SGR (Sistemul de Garanție-Returnare) Deposit Return Scheme launched November 30, 2023, one of Eastern Europe's most comprehensive DRS rollouts, covering PET bottles, glass, and aluminium cans up to 3L with a 0.50 RON deposit, operated by RetuRO SA. Romania still uses the Romanian Leu (RON) despite EU membership since 2007, with Euro adoption currently delayed.

Romania Packaging Regulations

EU FIC Regulation 1169/2011 applies; labels must be in Romanian for domestic retail. ANSVSA (Autoritatea Națională Sanitară Veterinară și pentru Siguranța Alimentelor, National Sanitary-Veterinary and Food Safety Authority) enforces food labelling compliance. Romanian Pălincă and Țuică (traditional plum/fruit brandy) hold EU GI status; Pălincă labels must indicate the fruit variety and specific production region (e.g., Pălincă de Bihor, Pălincă Ardeleană). The SGR DRS (RetuRO operator, launched November 2023) requires packaging of covered beverages (PET, glass, cans up to 3L) to carry the SGR logo and 0.50 RON deposit mark, a mandatory packaging change affecting all beverage producers selling into Romania. ANMDM (Agenția Națională a Medicamentului și a Dispozitivelor Medicale, National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices) regulates pharmaceutical packaging under EMA procedures.
