Ukraine (population approximately 44 million pre-war, capital Kyiv) has been under full-scale Russian military invasion since February 24, 2022, an escalation of the conflict that began with Russia's annexation of Crimea and the Donbas proxy war in 2014. The war has caused massive economic disruption: the port of Odesa (Black Sea Grain Initiative) was critical for agricultural exports before Russia suspended the agreement in July 2023; Ukraine and EU then established the 'Solidarity Lanes' overland and Danube rail-river routes for grain export. Despite the war, Ukraine remains one of the world's most important agricultural exporters: it is the world's largest exporter of sunflower oil (accounting for approximately 45–50% of global export) and a major exporter of wheat, corn (maize), and rapeseed. Ukraine was granted EU candidate status in June 2022 and is actively approximating EU standards under the EU-Ukraine DCFTA (Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement). Ukraine has a substantial IT and software development sector (Kyiv and Lviv tech hubs) and was the headquarters of Grammarly, GitLab, and other global software companies prior to the war.
