Gold dominates Burkina Faso's export economy, representing 82.3% of the country's total USD 5.64 billion export revenue in 2024, with industrial production reaching 53.3 tonnes and artisanal and small-scale mining contributing a further 8-plus tonnes. The most significant regulatory development for packaging designers is the September 2024 total suspension of raw shea kernel exports, implemented by the Burkinabè transitional government to redirect raw material to domestic processing facilities, partially relaxed from December 2025 under a seasonal quota (December to May) requiring exporters to hold a Special Export Authorization (ASE), pay an export levy of 200 CFA francs per kilogram, and contractually supply at least 25% of their shea nut volume to domestic processors before export. This structural policy shift is increasing domestic demand for finished shea butter and shea-based cosmetic product packaging targeting the EU natural cosmetics channel. Cotton is the principal non-mineral agricultural export at an estimated 292,600 tonnes in the 2024/2025 season, placing Burkina Faso as West Africa's fourth-largest producer, though less than 5% is processed domestically into textiles. All domestic consumer goods must carry French-language labelling under UEMOA harmonised standards.
